Learning the Internet

WebMonkey - for those teachers and students who want to learn a bit more about writing HTML, this site will help you to wade through the terminology in a user-friendly manner.

Search engines

Introduction to searching - search engines can seem complicated but this site helps train internet users in how to use the search engines to find what they want. It will take you through the process and explain what to do. 

Meta search engines will make your searches easier still by searching a number of engines at the same time, giving you a more comprehensive search:

Internet Libraries

Internet Libraries will give you vast access to information:

The Internet Public Library, for example, has links to many online books,  magazines and newspapers from all over the world - under Reading Room on the left menu.

Onelook Dictionaries - locates the word you enter from over 600 online dictionaries.  

A+ Research and Writing - a step by step approach as well as useful links and hints on finding information on the Internet.

Paradigm Online Writing Assistant - gives advice on how to write a better essay or report.

Newspapers

Business Communications News contains the archives of the newsletter. Some of these are useful with quizzes and information about resumes.

Literacyworks Learning - offers web-delivered instruction using current and past CNN  & CBS Broadcasting news stories for adult literacy and educational purposes.

Job Seeking

Job-seeking is an area which interests both learners and trainers.

CareerLab Cover letters  - provides a variety of reference letters for different situations.

ESL Learners

English quizzes - ESL Learners within our classes have special needs and can check their own progress or take time out to practice English using these quizzes.

Grammars in all languages can be found at this site. This could be particularly useful for non-English speaking background learners as it has links to English lessons on line as well as many other languages.

Bright Quotes for use by teachers teaching teambuilding can be found at this site.

Dealing with Conflict

Conflict Resolution Network  - produces a number of resources for dealing with conflict and the details are on their website.

Sexual Harassment is one of the areas which can engender conflict in a work situation. This online quiz allows you to introduce the topic in a non-threatening way to students who have not thought about it before. Even though the legal examples are American, it is still relevant in an Australian context.

Presenting Reports and Speaking in Public

Voice performance exercises - some tips on voice performance exercises, which could be useful for Presenting Reports.

Use of mnemonics - this site explains the use of mnemonics which could be useful in Speaking in Public and Presenting Reports.

Public Speaking website - this site has some useful information about the process of public speaking.

Additional information for this area may available via the wide variety of social software (link to Wikipedia) & other Internet services where people share their knowledge and connect/collaborate/communicate with others around the world who have similar interests. Some of these services (with main links to Wikipedia articles) are: 

• Wikis where information is published online through the collaborative input of many people - this information is then available for all to access & edit.
    • wikipedia  - an encyclopaedia with versions in a number of languages
    • wikispaces - used by individuals, education & special interest groups   
   
• Blogs (or web logs) are essentially online journals or diaries presented in reverse chronological order. Groups often use them to promote informal discussion on particular topics or issues.
    • blogger - search for relevant blogs with keywords of your choice
   
• RSS - this is a way of having a summary of information (or feeds) 'delivered' to your web browser or aggregator as it becomes available from online newspapers, magazines or special interest websites.
    • bloglines - an excellent way of managing your RSS subscriptions or Feeds
    
• Social bookmarking sites where users post their list of bookmarks (or favourite websites) for others to search and view. There are specialised services for particular interest groups.
    • del.icio.us is perhaps the best known general social bookmaking service
   
• Newsgroups & mailing lists are older types of Internet services (or forums) which are mainly used these days by special interest groups.
    • tile.net allows you to do keyword searches of these services

 Teaching resources

Curriculum Centres provide information and resources for TAFE NSW educational staff relating to this area on their Intranet website - this is only accessible to staff from within the TAFE NSW computer network.
