Do it the TAFE way

In TAFE NSW, you can study the HSC in a variety of ways:

bullet One-year, full-time: Because it covers work normally done in two school years, this program is very intensive and requires a large time commitment for both class attendance and private study.

bullet Two-year, full-time: In this program, students study a minimum of 12 units in the preliminary year and 10 units in the HSC year.

bullet One-year, reduced: This program is designed for people aged 20 or over (on March 1 of the HSC year) who need only one or two subjects for work purposes or who want to apply for mature-age entry to university. Students must complete between 5 – 9 units of HSC Board Developed courses (including an English course) to be eligible for the limited UAI.

bullet Accumulating program: The HSC can be completed over a 5 year period. This enables students to study part time. This program is suitable for students who are working, have family or other commitments or for students who only wish to repeat a few subjects from a previous attempt (within the 5 year limit).

bullet Open Training and Education Network and Distance Education (OTEN–DE): This open learning program is ideal for those who, either because of isolated geographic location or personal circumstances, are unable to attend regular classes.

How does it work?

TAFE NSW provides a relaxed, adult working environment where the emphasis is on self-discipline and individual responsibility.

Success in the HSC in TAFE depends on a certain level of maturity because you will be responsible for your own assignments and class attendance. During your first weeks in TAFE NSW you may spend some time investigating how to learn effectively and how to monitor your own learning.

Lessons in TAFE NSW may be between two to four hours long. Most 2 Unit subjects require 6 hours of classes a week. Practical classes may run longer than two hours.

Students can study a range of vocational courses as part of the HSC. VET courses include Business Services; Construction; Entertainment; Information Technology; Metal and Engineering; Primary Industries; Retail; Tourism; Hospitality; Design and Child Studies. You will need to check with your local TAFE campus for availability of VET courses.

Some campuses run both day and evening classes. You will need to contact individual campuses to find out if evening classes are being offered.

Where can I study?

The TAFE HSC is offered at a number of TAFE campuses in metropolitan and country locations across NSW. Each campus offers a different selection of subjects. You should consider carefully where you would like to study, taking into account such things as travel, accommodation, costs and your personal circumstances.

The Higher School Certificate and Tertiary Preparation Programs in
TAFE NSW 2008 booklet provides comprehensive information about the HSC course in addition to a full list of both metropolitan and country campus offerings for HSC subjects for 2008.

See http://www.tafensw.edu.au/courses/about/preparation.htm

How much does it cost?

Upon enrolment you will have to pay the Administration Charge for a certificate course ($654 in 2008). You will be responsible for buying your own textbooks and equipment. Costs will vary depending on which subjects you study.

You are also strongly encouraged to join the Student Association, which brings lots of benefits. Membership costs around $20 per year.

From 2008, all TAFE students who complete their HSC will qualify for a rebate of the course fee of $654.

Can I get financial assistance?

As a TAFE student you may be able to get financial assistance through Centrelink. TAFE counsellors will be able to advise you on whether you are eligible and how much you are likely to get, and can help you apply.

Will I qualify for a travel pass?

Full-time students may be entitled to a travel concession card. This operates on government bus, rail and ferry transport and, if you are under 30, on private buses in the metropolitan area.

If you are under 18 on 1st January of the year you enrol, you may be eligible for free travel to and from your classes. You can get your concession card and/or travel pass from your campus after you have enrolled.

How can I enrol?

To enrol in the TAFE HSC, you must have the NSW School Certificate or the TAFE Certificate in General and Vocational Education or an equivalent qualification.

You will need to contact the campus of your choice to find out about information sessions. During these sessions you will need to complete an application form and, in some cases, you may be required to attend an interview as part of the selection process.
