Retail, Logistics & International Trade

 What we do

Retail, Logistics & International Trade designs and maintains courses and learning resources for the following subject areas: 

wholesale & retail; purchasing & supply
warehousing; logistics; credit management
supply chain: manufacturer/grower to consumer
customs, import & export; international trade

Retail
The retail industry is large in size and diverse in type. It includes department stores, supermarkets, discount chains, fast food outlets, liquor stores, pharmacies, hardware, fashion, hairdressers, funeral services and related stores. A full range of nationally approved, Training Package courses from entry to managerial level is available in Retail, Community Pharmacy and Wholesale that focus on the development of both technical and general business skills as well as developing broader competencies in problem solving, communication and teamwork. 

Logistics 
Logistics focuses on how the process of planning, implementing and controlling the efficient, cost effective flow and storage of raw materials, in-process inventory and finished goods and related information from the grower through to the manufacturer, wholesaler and retailer.  The objective is to better manage and improve service levels in order to provide greater levels of satisfaction to the end consumer. As organisations strive to become world class in their respective fields, the dimensions of customer service, quality, the supply chain, transportation, warehousing, materials handling, purchasing, contracting, outsourcing, information systems, environmental impact and financial impact all take on new meaning and importance. Logistics is concerned with integrating and optimising these dimensions. 

The following course areas in Logistics are provided:

Purchasing - a purchasing and supply course is available that focuses on the procurement or supply of required materials, services and equipment. Course modules cover activities such as interviewing clients, analysing bids and making awards, selecting suppliers, maintaining records, value analysis, purchasing research and long-term materials planning.
 
Contracts Administration - contracts Administration modules are available that focus on preparation, evaluation and management of tenders and contracts. Students learn about setting  specifications and evaluation criteria, pricing structures, quality standards, risk management, advertising of tenders, dispute resolution, payment scheduling, and contract performance ratings.
 
Warehousing - courses in the area of warehousing include discussion of conventional or automated privately owned warehouses, public warehouses, distribution centres, leased warehouse space and storage in transit. Students learn skills in areas such as storage systems, warehouse layouts, receiving and despatching of goods, customer service and order picking.
 
Logistics - a Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Logistics are provided which focus on providing knowledge and skills in team leadership, co-ordinating stocktakes, managing inventory, planning for selecting and evaluating storage facilities, scheduling transport modes and movement of goods, planning and managing security procedures, managing contracts, establishing and maintaining national and international logistics networks, and setting and achieving budgets.
 
International Trade Facilitation - a Certificate IV level course is offered in this area that focuses on the skills, knowledge and attitudes needed by people who wish to be employed as a customs broker/international freight forwarder.  Graduates will be able to give technical advice on matters relating to the importation and exportation of goods or in relation to the international transportation of goods.

The International Students Centre assists and advises international students who would like to study in Australia on a student visa at a TAFE NSW institute, TAFE English language centre or a NSW government high school.   International Students can get help at all stages, from initial enquiries through to post course completion.
