TAFE NSW Alcohol & Drug Unit

 Role

The TAFE NSW Alcohol and Drug Unit provides advice, professional development and support in alcohol and drug education to TAFE NSW staff and students.

 Scope

In partnership with key community organisations, government agencies & TAFE NSW Institutes the Unit provides customised short courses for front-line and specialist workers who respond to alcohol and drug issues in the community.

The Unit also provides input and responses to DET and government policies, strategic plans and reports.

Current NSW policy requires the Unit to deliver training and support to workers in regional, rural and remote areas, indigenous communities, and those working with young people and volunteers.

 Responsibilities

The Unit's responsibilities include:

  • Policy development, implementation and review for TAFE NSW institutes
  • Development of training programs and educational resources
  • Professional development for TAFE NSW staff
  • Health promotion for students
  • Support for the NSW Drug and Alcohol Workforce Development Council's Secretariat
  • Provide advice on State and Federal Government drug and alcohol policies and strategic plans
  • Consultative services on alcohol and other drug related issues.

 Current Projects

The Unit's current projects include:

  • Managing short courses for front-line workers in rural and non-metropolitan areas
  • Providing resources and support to TAFE NSW institutes and campuses to conduct health promotion projects
  • Building the capacity of health workers who provide alcohol and other drug services to Aboriginal communities
  • Developing a Graduate Certificate in Alcohol and Other Drugs and Mental Health Practice
  • Developing a Statement of Attainment in Mental Health and Alcohol and Other Drugs Work
  • Developing alcohol and other drug policies and professional development for TAFE NSW Institute staff.
