New Manufacturing Research Program

In response to declining trends in education and training in the manufacturing and engineering sector, a program of research was contracted by the TAFE Commission Board to examine the changing skill requirements of the sector and the subsequent implications for TAFE NSW.

The research outcomes have redefined the vision for TAFE NSW role in skills development for the manufacturing and engineering sector.

Strategic directions are being formulated to revitalise and refocus TAFE NSW directions in service delivery and its vocational training products for the manufacturing and engineering industry sector in NSW.

The first two of a three-phase project are now complete and research reports are available for downloading:

  1. The Emerging Training Needs of the NSW Manufacturing and Engineering Sector – provides a clear account of the state of the manufacturing and engineering sector in NSW in the current national and global context and provides insights into the factors which need to be addressed for its future growth and development.

      • Executive Summary (summary1.pdf - 211K)
      • Final Report (report1.pdf - 2412K)

  2. Not with a bang but a whimper – Skills and the future of NSW Manufacturing and Engineering – provides innovative strategies that guide TAFE NSW away from its perception as simply a ‘nuts-and-bolts’ training provider, towards an innovative and dynamic ‘broker’ of skills development for individuals, enterprises and the manufacturing and engineering industry sector. The strategies for TAFE NSW include embracing a commitment to workforce development in partnership with industry for skill and industry renewal.

      • Executive Summary (summary2.pdf - 182K)
      • Final Report (report2.pdf - 614K)

Phase three of the manufacturing and engineering project is well underway and involves implementing strategic directions identified in the research. Updates will be available soon.
