Caroline Gude

I have always been intrigued by the idea of falling down a rabbit hole into another world. When deciding which story I was going to do, 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll stood out as being a story with some of the strangest characters that somehow seem familiar to us. Although the story centres on Alice, the young girl who falls down the rabbit hole, one of the most dominant characters in the story is the Queen of Hearts.

Costume - Caroline Gude

As she is the Queen, her costume must reflect her status. However, Alice in Wonderland is essentially a fairy tale, created to amuse a little girl, it is possible to set the story in any era. I decided to set the story in the late 18th century.

Instead of using traditional colours, I was influenced by the Walt Disney animated film and chose primary colours for the Queen of Heart's costume. The scene that I designed this costume for is when Alice first meets the Queen while she is walking around the garden inspecting the rose bushes that have been hurriedly painted red by the Queen's gardeners.
