Liliane Caillon

In the theatre costume industry, I am interested with the interpretation of a designers' concept of their designs; as the design is reflective of the character.

I have acquired a basic understanding of cutting, pattern-drafting, sewing and research-skills as applied to period costumes.  While at college I had the opportunity to work in the industry with highly respected and qualified local and international costumiers and designers eg.

  • John Papadopoulos:  Senior women cutter
  • Wolfgang Wesenberg: Senior men cutter
  • Douglas J. Stetz:  USA Costumier
  • Dona Granata:   USA Designer
My goal is to obtain the status of cutter; and then to travel both nationally and internationally in order to work for and with others so that I may enhance and continue to build upon my knowledge.

Lapérouse, Jean François de Galaup, Comte de

 Unveiling the ultimate gentleman's uniform

(excerpt from The Southern Courier 23rd February 1999 by Ralene Bliss)

An antique uniform that adds a new chapter in the story of the ill-fated French explorer La Perouse will be unveiled today to mark La Perouse Day.  The uniform will help bring to life the story of Comte de La Perouse 211 years after he left the infant Botany Bay colony on a fatal journey into the Pacific.

The unique uniform, now in the care of the La Perouse Museum in Botany Bay National Park, is the work of theatre costume design student Liliane Caillon, who spent 140 hours creating the replica as a project piece at Easy Sydney TAFE.

Southern Courier -23-2-1999

It is the ultimate 'gentleman's outfit', a one-off, handstitched, gold embroidered French naval officer's uniform with matching vest and pantaloons of a type fashionable two centruries ago.

Enviroment Minister Pam Allan said the extraordinary creation was based on the uniform in the State Library's 1785 painting Louis XVI giving instructions to La Perouse

'Every facet of the uniform, right down to the texture of the fabric and the buttons, was painstakingly researched', she said.....

Lapérouse
was a French explorer and naval officer, born near Albi, Tarn Department. After serving in the French navy for 29 years, he was, in 1785, placed in command of an expedition to explore the Pacific Ocean and to find a western approach to the North West Passage. With two ships, L'Astrolabe and La Boussole, he sailed as far north as Mount St Elias, Alaska, and across the Pacific to the Hawaiian Islands, Macao, and the Philippines.

Lapérouse sailed through the Sea of Japan, stopping at Korea and Japan, and continued north to the Tatar Strait. Between the islands of Sakhalin and Hokkaido he discovered a passage that was subsequently named Lapérouse Strait. The expedition continued, finally reaching Australia. In 1788, after setting sail from Botany Bay, the party vanished. Wreckage of his two vessels was found in 1826 off Vanikoro Island, north of the New Hebrides.

A four-volume work, based on the notes Lapérouse had sent to Paris in 1787, Voyage Around the World (1797; trans. 1798), was published posthumously.
