The Princess & the Pauper

Various aspects of the Theatre Costume Industry that interest me, such as:
  • Costume construction
  • Millinery
  • Draping
  • Research and Development
  • Design
  • Curation
During the course at East Sydney Campus I was able to have work experience at NIDA, ABC TV, Anthony Phillips & Opera Australia.  I gained knowledge in the wardrobe, working with cutters and designers.  I was also employed for the production of 'Grease'.

As a result of my Graphic Design background I have extensive experience with colours.  I am a fast learner and am very keen to work in the industry.  I enjoy working either as part of a team or by myself.

In the future, I would like a career where I could have hands-on  involvement in the making of costumes and headwear.  I want to learn all the skills I can in all areas of costume and headwear development and construction.

The Princess and the Pauper

My ideas came from Mark Twain's novel 'The Princess and the Pauper'.

The story starts like this.

...In the ancient city of London, on a certain autumn day in the second quarter of the sixteenth century, a boy was born to a poor family of the name of Canty, who did not want him.  On the same day another English child was born to a rich family of Tudor, who did want him.  All England wanted him to...
There was no talk in all England but of the new baby, Edward Tudor, Prince of Wales, who lay lapped in silks and satins, unconscious of all this fuss, and not knowing that great lords and ladies were tending him and watching over him.  But there was no talk about the other baby, Tom Canty.  Lapped in his poor rags, except among the family of paupers whom he had just come to trouble with his presence...'
