Welcome to TAFE NSW - Sydney Institute and the new base for Fashion Technology training re-established in April this year at Ultimo College.

Historic Turner Hall, completed in 1893 is the setting for Fashion Showcase 2001.

The Fashion Technology department combines fashion, theatre costume, footwear, textiles and millinery sections.

On the runway and in the multi-media presentation you will see the work of a vibrant educational community alive with technical skill and creative energy, essential attributes for a career in the fashion and related industries.

Projected images in the showcase include 2002/2003 trend tendencies courtesy of Promostyl; the leading Paris based agency that provides forecasting information to fashion houses world wide. The Fashion Technology Department Ultimo college is proud to be associated with Promostyl Australia.

Shaped Silhouettes
In a team project where production co-ordination is essential, second-year students interpreted trend tendencies forecast by Promostyl
and produced street and swim wear ranges using lycra, pvc, mesh and mechanical stretch fabrications.

Students developed the designs, storyboards and computer generated specification sheets.

The ranges were then engineered in pattern cutting and constructed using specialised machinery in the production class.

What happens in our classrooms reflects what goes on every day in the industry’s workrooms, showrooms, studios and offices.

First year students have manipulated a commercial production denim range, geared for a volume market and competitive price-point.

By adding individual design detail to computer-generated patterns, the sample range has been re-invented for mass customisation. Other students designed, planned, developed and manufactured their own marketable range.

Brimfull
The millinery section at Ultimo College is affiliated with the Musee du Chapeau in Chazelles-sur-Lyon, France. During 2001, the work of student Erica Hughes has been on exhibition in the Gallerie du Musee du Chapeau as part of the 4th International Model Hat Competition.

Classical millinery techniques such as steaming and blocking have been applied to traditional and new fibres and textiles to produce model hats sculpted and draped by students of the millinery department. Some of the hats showcased here were on exhibition in the recent “Millinery in the Muse” exhibition here at TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute, Ultimo College.

TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute is a founding member of the International Foundation of Fashion Technology Institutes, and is known for its own special brand of innovative career education for the fashion industry within today’s complex and diverse global environment.

Students are offered a wealth of opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

During the past year, alongside their studies, students have gained exposure to the fashion industry by actively participating in:

  • The Fashion Group International of Sydney’s Spring / Summer 2001/2002 Fashion Flash
  • The Mercedes Australian Fashion Week – Talking Trends 2001 Business Seminar
  • Marie Claire Fashion Show Live
  •  The 4th International Model Hat Competition hosted by the Musee du Chapeau, Chazelles sur Lyon

Linen Textures
Rapid changes in fashion and the trend for off-shore produced merchandise have created a greater need for skilled patternmakers. Students preparing to work as patternmakers and material’s managers learn the principles on which commercially produced garments are based.

Their design ideas are transformed into patterns and toile's, which are dissected, analysed, reassembled, and perfected into a production pattern. Students also learn to size and lay out pattern pieces efficiently and gain experience in costing, and utilizing cutting, sewing, and finishing processes and techniques.

Stage 2 students have developed custom-made boutique fashion where individual ‘fit’ and the subtle combination of textures feature.

Fashion workroom simulations which combine the practical and the theoretical, provide students with the kind of hands-on learning that makes for a seamless transition to the world of work.

Stage 1 students perfected their garment construction skills by working in teams on pre-cut garment bundles in a commercial production range with construction suitable for multiple markets.

stage II -Suits Suited
During their second year of training, students focus on the acquisition of production tailoring skills.

Students used CAD systems to develop individual jacket blocks. Their patterns and garment construction have been engineered to produce structured co-ordinates with sophisticated seaming and detail.

Footwear, Ultimo college Footwear Fetish
Specialist training in custom-made footwear is unique to TAFE NSW –Sydney Institute, Ultimo College.

The course aims, through hands-on experience of shoe design and construction in a practical workshop situation, to bring the commercial world of footwear production to students.

1998 celebrated the centenary of the birth of the ‘shoemaker to the stars’…..Salvatore Ferragamo. In seeking young talent the first Salvatore Ferragamo International Competition for Young Shoe designers was launched. Students from TAFE NSW - Sydney Institute's footwear section were again invited to participate in the competition alongside students from 30 worldwide colleges.

On site training
Over the years the Fashion Technology Department of TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute has forged many associations with Sydney’s fashion companies.  These commercial links allow us to integrate work placements for students as part of their training.

All students have placement opportunities within a range of companies and organizations from small to some multi-national enterprises.

Through working with industry students gain invaluable experience which contextualises what they have learnt in College. Students have the opportunity to work with designers, product developers, production managers, patternmakers, marketers and operators in real life situations.  This develops professionalism, teamwork and gives an opportunity to explore career options.

Through work placement students build close relationships that often lead to employment following graduation.

As well as participating in the student work placement program as host companies, some of Sydney’s leading fashion, footwear and textile companies have entered into training partnerships with Sydney Institute for skill’s recognition and up-skilling of their employees, under the Traineeship scheme.

With these Traineeships, instead of the trainee coming to the College, we take the training to the trainee in the workplace!

Signature Ranges
The Signature Range presented by each Diploma graduate, showcases the culmination of skills acquired throughout their study.  The ranges integrate skills in computer aided design and drafting, materials management, pattern cutting, fitting techniques, garment construction, pressing and finishing, promotion and image presentation.
