LINDA LICERALDE

I realised my call to fashion at the early age of nine during an arts and craft class meticulously handcrafting a cross stitch sample. Recognising my talents I set out to develop and refine them. I took design and technology / textiles and design electives throughout high school and went on to complete a Fashion diploma in Apparel Manufacturing.

I excel in the areas of :

  • Product Research and Development
  • TCF Information Technology
  • Quality Assurance, Maintenance, and Control
  • CAD Patternmaking and Grading
  • Patternmaking
  • Garment Construction for both Couture and Ready to Wear
I would like to pursue a career wherein I can utilise these talents. I am very creative and resourceful, have a good eye for detail and great style sense. I would also like to further my skills in the area of couture/ evening wear.
For the past 5 years I have been designing and creating one off, made to measure garments for family and friends. Most of my clients are high school students who are looking for formal gowns. Being young, I find it easy to relate to my clients and focus on what they want, keeping in mind their personality and body shape and together we come up with the perfect outfit for them.

I am planning to expand my client base to include women of all ages and I am constantly finding niches for different types of people. I think that the greatest contribution that I can make for the industry is reviving the consumer's interest in fashion because I listen to them and find out what they really want to wear. I've done a fair amount of research on consumer buying patterns and have found that people are becoming less satisfied with the clothes on offer. Of course there are many factors that contribute to this but I like to consider myself part of the solution. I want to keep fashion alive, and by fashion I mean helping people to look their best. I like to call it 'creating clothes for real people'.

    Fashion Industry interests:

Let's be honest. I am a very mediocre machinist. I'm good with the basics, but that's pretty much it. When it comes to pattern making my skills are also somewhat average. So why have I undertaken study where these skills form the core of the course? Why do I want a career in an industry that these skills centre around?

Well, my interest is in the magic of Marketing. For years I have been intrigued with the power of marketing in today's society. And I feel the fashion industry is an example of the utmost marketing intensive industry there is. I love the idea of the marketing lifecycle and how it relates to the fashion industry. From the preliminary stages of research through to product development and ultimately through to sales, every step intrigues me.

Knowledge and Experience in Fashion Industry: My experience of the fashion industry stems primarily form my studies here at East Sydney TAFE. I have learnt the basics and plenty more to boot. Throughout my studies at East Sydney TAFE I have principally focused on theory based subjects such as Marketing, Managing Operations, Quality, and Business Opportunity Assessment, as well as undertaken the more rudimentary subjects pertaining to fashion manufacturing skills.

I have undertaken previous tertiary studies in both Advertising and Marketing. I have proven administration skills gained through comprehensive experience in the work force. In my employment history I have also demonstrated success in the development and implementation of marketing and promotional strategies.

Plans for the Future: My long-term plan is to own my own consultancy, providing Australian fashion manufacturers with a quality marketing service. I am keen to combine my marketing and administration background with the production and design skills I am securing through my current studies. With this fusion of skills I will be equipped to establish a successful marketing career in the apparel manufacturing industry.

REBECCA JOHNSTONE

What aspects of the Fashion Industry
     interest you?

The Product Design and Developing area of the industry is where I see myself. I am an accurate pattern maker with a good eye for proportion. My blending and use of colour is a result of training that I received at the Julian Ashton Art School. I am also an accomplished and quick working sketcher. My specialty areas are in Women's higher end Suiting and Bridal wear. I am driven by the idea of uniquely created garments with a focus on perfect individualized fit and finishes. For this reason the Made to Measure Industry or a smaller High Fashion Manufacturing house are the two places I would like to be.
What are your areas of knowledge
     and experience within the industry?
My current work at The Emergency Button, Double Bay combines my skills of client communication, design flair, and an understanding of the construction of garments. I have sales experience with Grace Bros and David Jones. In addition I worked as a museum guide at Elizabeth Bay House, Vaucluse House, the Museum of Sydney and Hyde Park Barracks for 4 years, making me skilled at communicating with people. Time spent working with Nelder Jones, and Greg Sernack clothing has given me insight into the special occasion wear market from both a made to measure and manufacturing angle. Work experience at Jonathon Ward Couture, Collette Dinnigan, Akira Isogawa, Barotex Tailoring, and Charlie
Brown/Lili has brought me an understanding of garment construction, manufacturing considerations, constraints that the designers and pattern makers face, and a clear view of the industry in general.

What do you plan for your career in the
     industry?
My career goal for the next three years is to gain as much knowledge and experience in this industry, specializing in suiting and evening/bridal wear. I intend to combine this with my own personal flair to open my own suiting/bridal made to measure company.
What extra special qualities can you bring
     to the Industry?
I was chosen as a finalist in the Witchery Harper's Bazaar Retail Design Awards for 1998 for which I designed a corporate suit, with knit wrap top and cocoon coat in charcoal greys accented with fuscia pink. At present I create suits for clients privately, fitting the garments perfectly to their figure and needs.
